May 5-12 – Puerto Vallarta

We will be returning to Puerto Vallarta for the fourth year.  During the week we will donate wheelchairs in Puerto Vallarta & Compostela, hold a one-day sports camp teach those who receive wheelchairs how to use there equipment, and we’ll take those who receive equipment to visit a dolphin show in Nuevo Vallarta.

Volunteers will fly into Puerto Vallarta airport May 5.  We will meet you as you arrive at the airport and take you to the nearby hotel.  Sunday afternoon we will all have some time to get to know each other, have a short training time and orientation.  Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will be distributing wheelchairs.  Thursday we will host a recreation/sports camp to show those who receive wheelchairs how to get around and to play sportsl  We will have instructors who use wheelchairs and those who don’t show them how to be more active and independent.  Many of those who will receive the donated equipment don’t have the resouces to get out of the house, so we will treat them to a special event – a dolphin show at Vallarta Adventures.  Volunteers will fly back to the U.S. May 12.

The cost of the trip is $750 which includes transportation in Mexico, accomodations at a 5-star hotel on the ocean, some of the meals, trip insurance, and of course, a t-shirt.  To sign up for the trip fill out our Volunteer Application (bottom of page) and send it to Carol (clwilson@sierratel.com), our Trip Administrator.  If you have questions please call her at (209) 742-7048.

SUMMER OUTREACHES

July 7-14 (Open Enrollment) 

We invite individuals, churches, clubs and others to join us in rural Mexico, close to the area where we live and where our warehouse is located, to get to know the indigenous people.  Volunteers fly to Toluca, Mexico the capitol city of Mexico.  We will meet you at the airport, drive approximately one hour to Atlacomulco where the team will be staying.  You will be staying at a five  acre reatreat/convention facility with dorm rooms, bunk beds and locker style bathrooms.  Meals will be provided by local Mexicans.  We will distribute wheelchairs at the facility where we’ll be staying, go into the community to make a home or other location wheelchair accessible and we will have a tour day to see many local communities.  There will also be opportunities for visiting local shops, going to markets and getting to know Mexican people.

July 14-21 (Mariposa Team)

A group from Mariposa, California will be joining us for their fourth year.  They are a very open group from a local church, a Rotary club and other members of the community.  They are very friendly and open  to others joining them.  They will be doing the same activities as the other Summer Outreach team.

2011 EVENTS

MAZATLAN, MEXICO DECEMBER 3-12

We celebrated 15 years of providing support to people with disabilities in Mazatlan!   We hosted three events.  A wheelchair sports camp (Dec. 5 – 6), an Up/Down  tennis tournament (Dec. and a wheelchair tennis tournament, (Dec. 9 – 11).   During the sports clinic, we played tennis, basketball, soccer, baseball, and other sports.  We encouraged those who use wheelchairs to become independent, active and confident.  Tennis players from throughout Mexico from the U.S. participated.Join us and help us make this year’s events a life-changing experience for the participants, and for you too.  We look forward to hearing from you!

PUERTO VALLARTA OCTOBER 8 – 15

We spent in Puerto Vallarta donating wheelchairs, hosting a sports camp, and an excursion to visit dolphins for people with disabilities in Puerto Vallarta!

MAZAHUA VALLEY MISSION JULY 16 – 23

A team fom Mariposa, California joined us for a week of wheelchair distribution, community service projects, making a wheelchair accessible art studio, and more.  The people who live in the area are indigenous Mazahuan Indians.  Many people who live in the area have few resources, so the opportunity to provide mobility to them was an incredible blessing, for them, and for us too.
